The tools, and when to use each

Tool Use it for
Erase objects (content-aware fill) Whole objects: people, signs, bins, cars. Brush over and let go.
Spot heal Small blemishes, dust and specks. One click or a short dab.
Heal Larger repairs that should blend with the surrounding light and colour. You choose the source.
Clone Exact copies of texture or pattern, such as bricks, tiles or fabric.
Patch Select an area, drag it onto a clean area, and it’s replaced and blended in.
Red-eye Fixing red eyes from flash.

Tips

  • Go a little past the edges. Including a margin around the object gives the fill clean surroundings to work from.
  • Work in pieces. Remove a large object in two or three strokes rather than one.
  • Finish with Spot heal. It’s ideal for smoothing any leftover seams.

Questions

How is this different from Canva's Magic Eraser?

It does the same job, filling the area from its surroundings, but it's free and runs on your device. Canva's Magic Eraser is part of its paid plans.

What works best?

Objects on fairly even backgrounds such as sky, walls, grass, sand and water. Busy, detailed backgrounds may need a second pass, or the Clone and Patch tools for a hand-picked source.

Is the original photo kept?

Yes. Retouching is stored on its own layer of the photo, so you can undo, erase part of a fix, or remove all of them from the photo's stack.

Try it on your own design

Free, nothing to install, and your work stays on your device.
